Feeling like you didn’t spend enough time out on the water this summer? Us too! Before cooler weather blows in, come and enjoy a weekend of Coracle Building, and be on the water paddling your new boat the afternoon of the second day. Building a Coracle provides an ideal family experience and group project – and we encourage 2 or more builders on each boat.
Lightweight and propelled using a single paddle, the Coracle, a small round boat made by weaving and lashing saplings, and covered with a waterproof “skin” (we’ll be using cotton canvas), is a traditional boat found in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Western England.
We will be building our Coracles in one weekend – that includes foraging for our saplings on site and weaving the frame on Saturday, then fitting, sewing, and water-proofing the canvas skin with latex house paint by mid-day Sunday – and hopefully launching the boats Sunday afternoon (weather dependant).
The instructor for this class, Wade Smith, professional boatbuilder and boatbuilding instructor has been building boats of all shapes and sizes, with all variety of materials, for the better part of 25 years.
