Get comfortable using a Chain Saw and Felling backyard Trees

This class starts at 149 Hurricane Road beginning with a Chain Saw tutorial then moves across the street to the Gemmo Forest project to help with land management efforts removing invasive trees.

No experience required. (No one under 18 without an attending guardian). Please see below for important information regarding dress code & recommended “to bring”. THIS IS AN OUTDOOR, ACTIVE CLASS, DRESS FOR WEATHER & PARTICIPATION (see below)

We will be out in the weather to work on a saw buck and tree felling.  Students should dress accordingly including wearing sturdy hiking boots.  Safety gear is provided however students are welcome to bring their own Kevlar chaps, gloves, safety glasses, face shield and hard hat.  Students do not need to have their own chain saw – we will have a variety on hand for students to try, however if students are welcome to bring their own if they would like to get more comfortable with their own personal saw.

Description

Got some trees to cut down but nervous (or even terrified) of using a Chain Saw? Or, are you ok with the Chain Saw, but less than comfortable felling a tree?  No problem, we got you covered. 

This class begins with a Chain Saw tutorial. Through a guided, hands-on experience with an emphasis on safety, students will learn the ins and outs of using gas powered and electric saws including, proper operating position, PPE, and saw maintenance including how to change a blade, sharpen teeth, trouble shooting 2-stroke engine starting problems and more.  Then students will head out to learn proper tree felling techniques including tree selection, making the cut, using wedges, and when to call in a professional (because some trees you shouldn’t attempt yourself).

This is a hands-on class so please read carefully to make sure you are dressed for participation: Dress in Layers.  We will be outside for the majority of our class, if there is bad weather, we will start inside the greenhouse before moving outside. Dress for the weather. Wear works clothes; we recommend sturdy pants – jeans or the like preferred – Please wear sturdy hiking style shoes or aluminum / steel toes, or rubber soled boots.  If you have long hair, please be prepared to pull it back, avoid wearing dangling jewelry, floppy sleeves and remove loose hoodie ties and please no long dangling scarves.  
Bring your Chain Saw if you have one – if you don’t have one don’t rush out to buy one.  We will have an assortment on location and will be going over the specifics of various models (2-stroke, electric, plug-in).   If you have safety gear of your own (hard hat/face shield, safety glasses, safety chaps, sturdy & properly fitted work gloves) please bring them along, however we will have everything you need on location.   
Other good things to bring include a water bottle and reusable coffee cup.  We will have coffee, tea, water and light snacks available.  This class does stop down for 45 minutes for lunch and you are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.

Here students will be working in-the-field to fell trees.  Class is 10 – 5pm.  Please park along the driveway then look for a sign for class location.
