Description

Intro to Timber Framing introduces students to the fundamentals of designing and constructing a timber frame structure. New England is synonymous with timber framing; from our colonial hand-hewed post & beam houses and barns, to the world-famous state-of-the-art hyperefficient timberframe homes built nearby – building or repairing a timber frame with simple tools and local wood can be within reach of anyone!   The course will be focused on using traditional hand tools and techniques to learn and practice the joinery on which all of timber framing is literally built. Topics will include getting comfortable with hand-tools, tool sharpening, frame design and layout,  wood & joinery choices, and frame integration – as well as study of a 19th century frame (a very large one!) with discussion of repair strategies.  Hands-on elements will include cutting the fundamental mortise & tenon and half-lap joints, and shaping & drilling for pegs.
This course includes 6 classes happening Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:30pm, May 6th – June 10, $280
